Tomtit

miromiro · Petroica macrocephala

Look along forest edges and tracks, where they perch low and watch for insects.

A rare visitor at most.

Story

Auckland's tomtits mainly live on Hauturu and in the Waitākere and Hūnua Ranges. They recolonised Rangitoto on their own, but a transfer to Tiritiri Matangi failed.

Behaviour

A big-headed little bird that watches from a low perch, then darts out to snatch insects. Males are black and white, females brown and white. Pairs hold their territory all year.
