North Island robin

toutouwai · Petroica longipes

Look along shady forest tracks. The nearest population is at Tāwharanui.

Not resident on Kawau. A sighting here would be very unusual.

Story

Toutouwai survive naturally in the central North Island and on Hauturu and Kapiti. The Hauturu population thrived after cats and kiore were removed. Transfers elsewhere in Auckland have had mixed success.

Behaviour

Tame, long-legged grey birds that feed on the forest floor. Where people are common they will come within a metre, and they sometimes stand on a walker's boot.
