Introduced

Yellowhammer

hurukōwhai · Emberiza citrinella

Found on open grassy ground and track edges, with males singing from treetops.

Story

Released from Britain by acclimatisation societies between 1865 and 1879. It ate so much freshly sown grass seed and grain that a bounty was put on the birds and their eggs.

Behaviour

Spends most of its time on the ground, eating grass seeds and insects. Outside the breeding season it can gather in flocks of more than a thousand, often mixed with finches and sparrows.
