Grey duck

pārera · Anas superciliosa

Would be found on quiet ponds and in sheltered coves.

Most grey ducks on Kawau are mallard hybrids. A pure bird would be a rare find.

Story

Once New Zealand's common duck, the pārera has been swamped by crossbreeding with introduced mallards. Grey duck–mallard hybrids are now widespread, and pure grey ducks are critically rare.

Behaviour

Timid and easily spooked. They are usually seen alone or in pairs on quiet, undisturbed water, feeding mostly on plants. They prefer wild places to farmland.
