Bellbird

korimako · Anthornis melanura

Most likely in flowering trees on the northern side, facing Tāwharanui.

An occasional visitor rather than a resident.

Story

Bellbirds vanished from mainland Northland and Auckland in the 1860s, and nobody knows why. Birds from Hauturu recolonised nearby Tāwharanui in 2005, flying about 23 km over the sea to get there.

Behaviour

Olive-green honeyeaters that feed on nectar and fruit, pollinating flowers and spreading seeds. They defend territories when breeding, then roam 10 km or more to find food.
